Wills fends off comeback at Essex Kent

Things were looking good for Austyn Wills during the championship round of the senior flight at the Essex-Kent Junior Golf Tournament. He led the match play final 3-up at the turn.

"Once I started hitting a couple of bad shots nerves started to get to me." said Wills who watched Andrew Baker storm back to tie it on the 14th hole and take the lead on 15 at Roseland. It all came down to the 18th hole. "Nice bunker shot by Austyn there on 18. Got it done." said Baker.

This was Wills' first golf win. He also helped the Belle River Nobles win the WECSSAA AA hockey championship earlier this year.

Garant wins Novice division

Mason Garant won the Novice Championship flight beating Will's brother J.J four-up with three to go. "It means a lot," The 12-year old told Powerplay Sports. "It's all the best kids my age in Windsor-Essex County. He (Wills) was really hard to play against. His short game was really good and he was sticking everything tight."

Garant will soon be gearing up for the hockey season playing for the Chatham Cyclones U-13 team. "It's a big year. It's the last year before hitting." said Garant who is hoping his team, coach by former Windsor Lancer Kyle Hope, get chosen to play in the Quebec International PeeWee Tournament in February of 2025 featuring some of the best teams in the world. The Cyclones were top-10 in Ontario last season.

Garant says golf is awesome but, "hockey is definitely my sport." The Cyclones open camp the first week of September.

This is why...

Powerplay Sports was born while on a trip to Italy in the summer of 2018. Walking through a charming pedestrian underpass reminded me of being in the tunnel at the University of Michigan in the early part of my career. That feeling led to thoughts of Windsor Lancers football camp opening in three weeks and all of the fall sports that weren't going to be covered because of cuts to local sports coverage by legacy media.

With the support of a loving wife and family, I decided to create Powerplay Sports as a passion project.

I've come across some great people who have helped capture the essence of our community throughout the years like Tony Techko, Tony Doucette, Scott Scantlebury, Dom Papa, Steve Bell, Will Hill, Jim Parker and Mary Caton to name a few.

Please spread the word and follow along here or on social media so we can continue having the priviledge of highlighting our athletes, our community.
