Vista falls to Wolfpack

Tecumseh Vista gave it a good shot but fell short of their goal of qualifying for OFSAA. The Vortex fell to Sarnia's Great Lakes 49-34 in the SWOSSA final at home in a loud gym Thursday night. "Absolutely super proud," said TVA head coach Melanie Cardinal. "We got better with every game and with every practice. Making it to SWOSAA was a phenomenal accomplishment.

Vista trailed 29-16 at the half cut the deficit to eight midway through the fourth quarter on a Kennedy Awender three-pointer but Zoey Ainsworth responded with a triple as the Wolfpack scored five quick points to re-establish their 13-point lead.

Awender finished with seven points. Kaitlyn Pepper led Vista with 11 points followed by Natalie Ellsworth with eight. Allison Deelstre had a game-high 23 points for Great Lakes who advance to OFSAA next week in North Bay.

There were a few tears shed as the Vortex graduate five players including Mikayla Daly who is happy to have been part of a season that brought the school its first ever WECSSAA basketball championship.

"We thought this might be our year to go to OFSAA. We worked so hard but you know, city champs, something to be proud of."
