Villanova wins AAA girls hockey title

Chelsey Benoit and Meridith Coulter scored two goals each to lead the Villanova girls hockey team to the WECSSAA AAA title Monday afternoon at the Vollmer Recreation Complex. They struck for goals 23 seconds apart in the second to give the Wilcats a comfortable 4-1 lead.

Sandwich captain Carissa Hann cut the lead in half early in the third before Gabriella Sivell restored Villy's two goal cushion. Hann would scored her second of the game with the goalie pulled with 2:45 left in the contest but that's as close as the Sabres would get. After finishing the season third in the standings with a 6-4 record, Villanova upsets Sandwich, who were 8-1-1, 5-3 in the final. The Wildcats will host SWOSSA next Tuesday.

This is why...

Powerplay Sports was born while on a trip to Italy in the summer of 2018. Walking through a charming pedestrian underpass reminded me of being in the tunnel at the University of Michigan in the early part of my career. That feeling led to thoughts of Windsor Lancers football camp opening in three weeks and all of the fall sports that weren't going to be covered because of cuts to local sports coverage by legacy media.

With the support of a loving wife and family, I decided to create Powerplay Sports as a passion project.

I've come across some great people who have helped capture the essence of our community throughout the years like Tony Techko, Tony Doucette, Scott Scantlebury, Dom Papa, Steve Bell, Will Hill, Jim Parker and Mary Caton to name a few.

Please spread the word and follow along here or on social media so we can continue having the priviledge of highlighting our athletes, our community.
