Sun County catching groove at OHL Cup

Updated: 24 minutes ago

Three games into the tournament and the Sun County U16 team finds itself undefeated.

“I really like our game right now," Head coach Zack Percy told Powerplay Sports. "I think it took us two games to get settled. The boys were a little nervous for games 1 and 2, but game 3 we settled in nicely and outworked a very talented Vaughn team to give us a good shot at getting into the Quarter finals.”

Eric Wood tied the game in the third to help the Panthers salvage a tie in their opening game of the tournament opener.

Alexander Lisi's wrist shot from the left wing helped the Panthers score a dramatic 6-5 overtime win over York Simcoe Wednesday morning. They followed that up with a solid 5-2 win over Vaughn. "“I really think the boys are just loving the atmosphere around the rink," Percy said. "A ton of talented players there, all of the scouts watching, the boys are really just soaking it all in. It’s one of the best minor hockey league tournaments in Canada”

Highlights from Sun County's win over Vaughn.

Captain Jaakko Wycisk has a goal and six assists to lead the team. Brayden Lappalainen has three goals and two assists.

Sun County is off until Wednesday afternoon when they play the Toronto Jr. Canadiens at 1:15pm.

We caught up with the team before they left and spoke to a trio of players who explain their approach heading into the tournament.

This is why...

Powerplay Sports was born while on a trip to Italy in the summer of 2018. Walking through a charming pedestrian underpass reminded me of being in the tunnel at the University of Michigan in the early part of my career. That feeling led to thoughts of Windsor Lancers football camp opening in three weeks and all of the fall sports that weren't going to be covered because of cuts to local sports coverage by legacy media.

With the support of a loving wife and family, I decided to create Powerplay Sports as a passion project.

I've come across some great people who have helped capture the essence of our community throughout the years like Tony Techko, Tony Doucette, Scott Scantlebury, Dom Papa, Steve Bell, Will Hill, Jim Parker and Mary Caton to name a few.

Please spread the word and follow along here or on social media so we can continue having the priviledge of highlighting our athletes, our community.
