In her first meaningful fight at home, Rosalind Canty flexed her way to the provincial championship in the 57k division at Central Park Athletics. She scored three standing eight counts against Maika Bonneau of the Thousand Islands Boxing Club to claim a unanimous decision.
I thought it was a really good fight," said the rising Border City Boxing Club star. "I think I could have stopped it in the first. I'm super proud of my performance."
Canty landed a couple of crowd pleasing punches and looked strong from the opening bell. Her comfort level was to the point where she let her guard down while dancing around the ring landing punches in the first round.
"I'm trying to have fun in there. I'm trying to dance, move around, show my skill off the whole entire time," Canty explained to Powerplay Sports. "Everybody thinks you gotta be your hands up the entire time but I like to have my hands down moving just showing my skill inside of there and how much fun I'm having in the ring because I love boxing."
A large crowd was on hand at Central Park Athletics for Boxing Ontario matchup, Canty's first official fight in her hometown. "This was an amazing experience. I loved the turn out. There's so many people here to support me. It was fun because I could hear my family and I could hear my friends."
Sunday's win qualifies Canty for the national championships being held in Sarnia starting November 19th. "There's some things I need to work on from that fight but overall I'm proud of my performance and I'm excited to keep on growing as a fighter."
