The Sandwich track and field team brought home a lot of hardware from the OFSAA championships in Toronto. A 12 medal effort gave the Sabres the overall team title. "It was exciting." said head coach Rob Moore whose squad won four gold, four silver and four bronze medals. "The most medals we ever won is ten."
Ella Steel-Douglas was a part of all four gold medals winning the 80m hurdles, 300m hurdles, long jump and 4x100 relay. "I felt amazing to win four golds." said the grade 9 athlete. "My coaches told me I had a great opportunity to do something that hasn't been done, and I made that an ultimate goal for the weekend."
Steel-Douglas swept through WECSSA, SWOSSA, Regionals and OFSAA winning all of her races. "I've been winning all my events since the all-comers meets, and I really wanted to finish off my season just how it started. I physically felt ready for all of my races, and mentally I set new times I wanted to run for some other goals to help me be successful"
Moore added, "She's just strong and dominant and very talented young lady."
Along with the overall title, the Sabres also took the Novice Girls and Junior Boys Divisions along with the Overall Girls and Boys titles. "We were set and holding that banner showed all the hard work we put in." said Steel-Douglas. "We wanted to represent Sandwich and that's what we did."
Moore says the team's successful weekend is a testament to the school's track culture. Of the 16 coaches on staff, 13 of them are former Sabres. "I actually had two kids already this year say can we come back to coach next year and I'm like come on back, would love to have you."
