Sabres basketball remain undefeated

The Sandwich sr. boys basketball team is undefeated following their 62-38 win over Villanova Thursday night. Blake Bernardic led the way with 16 points with Ansue Kromah pitched in 11 as the Sabres moved to 4-0 and lead the Tier 1 division. "A couple of juniors coming up. We hope to continue that same pace and be in the championship game in February."

Francesco Nencini leds all scored with 20 points for Villanova who dropped to 0-3 on the season.

Omar Chaaban, who is in his final year at Sandwich, scored seven points. He was one of the main offensive threats last season but his game has evolved. "He's bought into the team." said head coach Christian Seguin. "He moves the ball. He lets his teammates get involved. He doesn't force shots. When he's doing that he's such a versatile player coz the attention seems to go to him a lot so when he's moving the ball and making others better that's when we really become an offensive powerhouse in WECSSAA."

Chabaan gave up playing travel basketball after grade 11 after deciding to focus on getting a track and field scholarship in the U.S. "Maybe play a little basketball here and there still but honestly the main focus is track." said Chaaban whose bread and butter events are the 100 and 200m dash. He ran 10.8 and 22.10 last season and hopes to drop those times in the spring.

For now he's enjoying his final year of high school basketball. "Looking forward to it and next week got a big game against Holy Names (3-0) and this weekend we actually have a tournament in Belle River we're getting ready for starting (Friday) so it's a good win (vs Villanova), good team effort and I'm glad the way the team is progressing right now."
