Play For A Cure preview (with video)

Play For A Cure is ramping for a 4th edition starting Thursday night with their Draft Party. "Everything is lined up well," said event founder Jeff Casey. "I have a weird amount of calmness and time on my hands."

All of that will disappear once the draft gets underway at Caesars Windsor Thursday. He's got a solid lineup of hockey stars available to be chosen by tournament participants.

The tournament is scheduled for Friday at the Vollmer Recreation Complex with a shootout planned for 12:30.

The Allstar Game is slated for Friday night at 6:30 at the Vollmer featuring a halftime performance by YouTube stars Pavel Barber and Zac Bell sponsored by Woody's Hoodies. Fans will get a chance to see former NHL and Team Canada favourites like Adam Graves, Gary Roberts, Andre Roy, Meghan Agosta and Angela James to name a few.

A unique session is being held at the Vollmer Saturday called Girls Skills For A Cure. Players will get to learn from hockey starts that played at the international level like Agosta, Megan Bozek, Sami Jo Small and members of the Windsor Lancers among others.

What excites Casey about the whole event is the opportunity to raise funds for collaborative cancer research in the Windsor-Essex area. "The money raised, I won't tell you until tomorrow but the way that the group guys and girls and sponsors and volunteers continue to come together to make this all happen, that's the overwhelming part." Casey said.

To date, Three events has raised 1.2 million. "We're creating awareness and raising money."

This is why...

Powerplay Sports was born while on a trip to Italy in the summer of 2018. Walking through a charming pedestrian underpass reminded me of being in the tunnel at the University of Michigan in the early part of my career. That feeling led to thoughts of Windsor Lancers football camp opening in three weeks and all of the fall sports that weren't going to be covered because of cuts to local sports coverage by legacy media.

With the support of a loving wife and family, I decided to create Powerplay Sports as a passion project.

I've come across some great people who have helped capture the essence of our community throughout the years like Tony Techko, Tony Doucette, Scott Scantlebury, Dom Papa, Steve Bell, Will Hill, Jim Parker and Mary Caton to name a few.

Please spread the word and follow along here or on social media so we can continue having the priviledge of highlighting our athletes, our community.
