McGrail sends Lancers to OFSAA

The SWOSSA AA championship game between Belle River and Petrolia's LCCVI Lancers in Lakeshore was a thriller that Tyler McGrail capped off with a dramatic winner in double-overtime.

The visiting Lancers took a 3-1 lead in the second period when Jack Morningstar took a giveaway in front of the Belle River net and made a deposit into the Nobles net.

Drew Stahlbrand scored late in the 2nd cutting the deficit to one with an easy tap in from the side of the LCCVI net. It looked as though that's how the game would end. Belle River pushed but the Lancers were hitting hard and goalie Sean Shanahan was holding down the fort.

The Nobles pulled goalie Jesse Werstein for the extra attacker and capitalized with the extra man. Vincent Bondy sent the Atlas Tube into a frenzy with 1:04 left. Belle River had the better of the chances in overtime but it's the Lancers that struck the final blow. McGrail picked up a faceoff win and wristed home the winner at 3:04 of the second overtime sending the Lancers back to the OFSAA championships for a second straight year.

This is why...

Powerplay Sports was born while on a trip to Italy in the summer of 2018. Walking through a charming pedestrian underpass reminded me of being in the tunnel at the University of Michigan in the early part of my career. That feeling led to thoughts of Windsor Lancers football camp opening in three weeks and all of the fall sports that weren't going to be covered because of cuts to local sports coverage by legacy media.

With the support of a loving wife and family, I decided to create Powerplay Sports as a passion project.

I've come across some great people who have helped capture the essence of our community throughout the years like Tony Techko, Tony Doucette, Scott Scantlebury, Dom Papa, Steve Bell, Will Hill, Jim Parker and Mary Caton to name a few.

Please spread the word and follow along here or on social media so we can continue having the priviledge of highlighting our athletes, our community.
