McCarty enjoys coming home to wrestle

Updated: Aug 2, 2024

Darren McCarty is well known in these parts as a four-time Stanley Cup champion from Leamington, Ontario but he is now a fan favourite in Essex-County for another reason.

The 52-year old has been coming to Windsor the last few years to showcase his personality in the ring as a wrestler. He was in town recently for the Fantastic Fathers Father's Day event as the main event, which did not disappoint.

"The wrestling is the subject but it's about the people," McCarty told Powerplay Sports while explaining his affinity for BCW head Scott D'Amore. "I'll follow him wherever he tells me we're going."

McCarty explains how D'Amore helped him check off a bucket list moment at St. Clair College last year when he stunned Bulley Ray Dudley on TNA. "I can't thank Scott enough."

He'll be back in the city on July 27th for a BCW outdoor showcase in downtown Windsor.

"Another great resource for local sports produced by a person that has been invested in local sports for decades."

This is why...

Powerplay Sports was born while on a trip to Italy in the summer of 2018. Walking through a charming pedestrian underpass reminded me of being in the tunnel at the University of Michigan in the early part of my career. That feeling led to thoughts of Windsor Lancers football camp opening in three weeks and all of the fall sports that weren't going to be covered because of cuts to local sports coverage by legacy media.

With the support of a loving wife and family, I decided to create Powerplay Sports as a passion project.

I've come across some great people who have helped capture the essence of our community throughout the years like Tony Techko, Tony Doucette, Scott Scantlebury, Dom Papa, Steve Bell, Will Hill, Jim Parker and Mary Caton to name a few.

Please spread the word and follow along here or on social media so we can continue having the priviledge of highlighting our athletes, our community.
