Maytham helps push Ontario to the podium

Updated: Mar 3

Kennedy Maytham was one of six high school athletes chosen to play for the Western Ontario Girls Badminton team and recently competed at the Ontario Winter Games in Thunder Bay.

“It was an amazing experience," said the grade 10 St. Anne student. "It was so fun to be around so many talented players, and I made some great friends.”

Maytham's team beat the Central Ontario Badminton team 4-1 in the Bronze medal match.

“Although my father coached me throughout elementary school at École Ste-Marguerite d’Youville in Tecumseh, I have been fortunate to have worked with some great coaches this year. Coach Chudyk from Belle River HS and Coach Hansen from Leamington HS have been huge factors in my development.” Maytham said.

The 15-year old tells Powerplay Sports she wasn't able to play high school badminton last season because she competed at the Ontario Volleyball Championships as a member of the South County Bandits National team. "I am looking forward to playing badminton at school this year.”

Maytham says she would like to return to the Winter Games when she is in grade 12. Until then she's excited to compete and take a shot at qualifying for OFSAA one day.
