Maggio's pursuit of 50

Updated: Mar 14, 2023

Matthew Maggio continues his pursuit of 50 goals Wednesday at home against the Saginaw Spirit. The Tecumseh native had a goal and three assists Saturday night against Kitchener to become the first player in the OHL this season to crack the 100 point mark. His 103 points is tops in the league and sits him third in the CHL behind Jordan Dumais (122) of Halifax and Regina's Connor Bedard (125).

Maggio leads the OHL with 49 goals and is tied for third in the CHL with Kai Uchacz of Red Deer and Alexis Gendron of Gatineau. He can become the first Spitfire since Steve Ott in 2000-01 to hit the 50-goal mark this Wednesday at home against the Saginaw Spirit.

Here's a tidbit for you. Former Spits forward Tim Findlay scored his 50th goal on March 15th, 1996.

This is why...

Powerplay Sports was born while on a trip to Italy in the summer of 2018. Walking through a charming pedestrian underpass reminded me of being in the tunnel at the University of Michigan in the early part of my career. That feeling led to thoughts of Windsor Lancers football camp opening in three weeks and all of the fall sports that weren't going to be covered because of cuts to local sports coverage by legacy media.

With the support of a loving wife and family, I decided to create Powerplay Sports as a passion project.

I've come across some great people who have helped capture the essence of our community throughout the years like Tony Techko, Tony Doucette, Scott Scantlebury, Dom Papa, Steve Bell, Will Hill, Jim Parker and Mary Caton to name a few.

Please spread the word and follow along here or on social media so we can continue having the priviledge of highlighting our athletes, our community.
