London stuns St. Clair to win OFC title

During the team picture a London Beefeaters player exclaimed, "It ain't over 'til the fat lady sings" quoting a much often used proverb cautioning against the temptation to forecast an outcome before the end.

It looked as though the outcome was well in hand with the St. Clair Fratmen on top with 1:59 remaining in the OFC championship game at Acumen Stadium. The home team had a 14-0 lead on a Jake Holloway field goal, a Dante Lewis touchdown and a pair of safeties.

The game was a defensive battle in the trenches so assuming the game would run its logical course made sense. Then a punt deviated from routine to chaotic for the Fratmen as the snap sailed over Holloway's head and into the St. Clair endzone. Holloway tried desperately to recover the ball but Nick Samis fell on it getting the Beefeaters on the board.

Following an offensive series by St. Clair London took a shot at tying the game. Quarterback Clarke McCallum hit Spencer Foster with a 41-yard touchdown pass helping get the visitors on even ground with 54 seconds left.

On the ensuing kick off the Beefeaters forced a fumble at the St. Clair 19 and recovered the ball in the red zone. After a couple of plays, Leo Centeno kicked the game winning rouge as time expired. The Beefeaters sideline exploded as players rushed to the field in celebration.

This is why...

Powerplay Sports was born while on a trip to Italy in the summer of 2018. Walking through a charming pedestrian underpass reminded me of being in the tunnel at the University of Michigan in the early part of my career. That feeling led to thoughts of Windsor Lancers football camp opening in three weeks and all of the fall sports that weren't going to be covered because of cuts to local sports coverage by legacy media.

With the support of a loving wife and family, I decided to create Powerplay Sports as a passion project.

I've come across some great people who have helped capture the essence of our community throughout the years like Tony Techko, Tony Doucette, Scott Scantlebury, Dom Papa, Steve Bell, Will Hill, Jim Parker and Mary Caton to name a few.

Please spread the word and follow along here or on social media so we can continue having the priviledge of highlighting our athletes, our community.
