Local Sports Recap

Here's a snapshot of the past week in our local sports community.

The St. Clair football team qualified for the OFC final with a hard-fought 29-3 win over the Ottawa Sooners Saturday night. https://www.windsoressexsports.com/post/saints-advance-to-ofc-final


Local golfers enjoyed success on the provincial stage. Bennett Brazier won gold at Ambassador Golf. https://www.windsoressexsports.com/post/brazier-caps-off-memorable-year

The Lancers football team came back from their bye week and lost a tough one at Laurier 40-7. https://www.windsoressexsports.com/post/lancers-fall-to-laurier-1

On the high school scene, the St. Joe's sr. girls basketball team is looking strong as they improved to 6-0. They fell short in the semi-finals last year and look to earn the school's first sr. girls basketball banner this fall. https://www.windsoressexsports.com/post/lasers-are-on-a-mission


The LaSalle Vipers came from behind to earn a pivotal win against St. Mary's. The Vipers are the top team in the Western Conference. https://www.windsoressexsports.com/post/vipers-beat-st-mary-s


In the OJHL, the Leamington Flyers won a pair of games to improve to 7-4-2. They are currently tied for 4th in the Western Conference with the Georgetown Raiders. They travel to Buffalo Wednesday before hosting Georgetown Thursday.


In the OHL, the Windsor Spitfires struggled losing all three games this weekend. They started with a 6-4 loss at home against Kingston before losing in Erie Saturday and Kitchener Sunday. Windsor is on a 5-game losing skid.

The women's cross country team at St. Clair College placed third for the second straight meet at the Colts Invitational hosted by Centennial in Scarborough. Victoria Horrobin crossed the line in 5th finishing the 6k course in 25:20. The Saints will now prepare for the provincial championships on the 28th.

The Lancer men's hockey team hosted their home opener Friday with a 4-2 win over Nipissing and capped off the weekend beating the Lakers 4-1 Saturday night. Windsor is 3-1, tied for second in the OUA West with Toronto. They are back in action at home at the end of the month with they host Ottawa October 27th.

This is why...

Powerplay Sports was born while on a trip to Italy in the summer of 2018. Walking through a charming pedestrian underpass reminded me of being in the tunnel at the University of Michigan in the early part of my career. That feeling led to thoughts of Windsor Lancers football camp opening in three weeks and all of the fall sports that weren't going to be covered because of cuts to local sports coverage by legacy media. 

With the support of a loving wife and family, I decided to create Powerplay Sports as a passion project.  

I've come across some great people who have helped capture the essence of our community throughout the years like Tony Techko, Tony Doucette, Scott Scantlebury, Dom Papa, Steve Bell, Will Hill, Jim Parker and Mary Caton to name a few.
