Leamington leaves GOJHL

Days after celebrating their Sutherland Cup championship the Leamington Flyers have announced a move to play Junior A in the Ontario Junior Hockey League. “The OJHL is extremely excited to welcome the Leamington Flyers to the OJHL starting in the 2023-2024 season”, said OJHL Commissioner Marty Savoy in a league statement.

By adding the Flyers the OJHL now has 23 teams.

The club was formed in 1954 as an intermediate team and moved to the Junior B level in 1992. “This move represents more than just a change in the playing field; it symbolizes our unwavering commitment to developing young talent and propelling them to the next level of their hockey careers." said part-owner Jason Melo.

Dale Mitchell remains as head coach of the team which is holding a tryout camp June 3-4 at the Nature Fresh Farms Recreation Centre. "The goal is to keep kids in Ontario so they can play at the highest level possible closest to home. We look forward to giving players that opportunity." said general manager Justin Solcz.

This is why...

Powerplay Sports was born while on a trip to Italy in the summer of 2018. Walking through a charming pedestrian underpass reminded me of being in the tunnel at the University of Michigan in the early part of my career. That feeling led to thoughts of Windsor Lancers football camp opening in three weeks and all of the fall sports that weren't going to be covered because of cuts to local sports coverage by legacy media.

With the support of a loving wife and family, I decided to create Powerplay Sports as a passion project.

I've come across some great people who have helped capture the essence of our community throughout the years like Tony Techko, Tony Doucette, Scott Scantlebury, Dom Papa, Steve Bell, Will Hill, Jim Parker and Mary Caton to name a few.

Please spread the word and follow along here or on social media so we can continue having the priviledge of highlighting our athletes, our community.
