Lancers DB has spring in his step

Robert Springer called his shot before the game. The defensive back from Little Rock Arkansas made it known he was aiming for a big game with three interceptions. "My brother Dilly asked me how many I'm going to get. I told him I was gonna get three interceptions man."

After he pulled off the feat, which earned his OUA Defensive Player of the Week, Springer was seen celebrating with "Dilly" on the Lancers sideline to the joy of everyone around.

Springer made life miserable for Queen's quarterback Alex Vreeken as the Windsor Lancers opened the season with a 25-21 win over the Golden Gaels. The defensive back picked off the 4th year pivot three times, each one as the visitors threatened to score.

"We've always been confident in our defence," Quarterback Danny Skelton told Powerplay Sports. "He (Robert) is one of the hardest workers on the team. He's always in the film room trying to perfect his craft. He's really earned the opportunity."

On his second interception, Springer jumped a route at the Lancers' 10-yard line, returned the ball 15 yards before stepping out of bounds. The second-year DB then proceeded to bring the ball to his mom who was in town visiting and sitting field level.

"My mom and dad, I picked them up Thursday night from the airport, man and I told them I was gonna give them something to remember." Springer told Powerplay Sports.

It was a cool moment and a great outing that helped the Lancers open the season with a win helping the team earn a spot in the USport Top-10 at number six.

Windsor is at Carleton Saturday afternoon at 4pm before heading into a bye week.

This is why...

Powerplay Sports was born while on a trip to Italy in the summer of 2018. Walking through a charming pedestrian underpass reminded me of being in the tunnel at the University of Michigan in the early part of my career. That feeling led to thoughts of Windsor Lancers football camp opening in three weeks and all of the fall sports that weren't going to be covered because of cuts to local sports coverage by legacy media.

With the support of a loving wife and family, I decided to create Powerplay Sports as a passion project.

I've come across some great people who have helped capture the essence of our community throughout the years like Tony Techko, Tony Doucette, Scott Scantlebury, Dom Papa, Steve Bell, Will Hill, Jim Parker and Mary Caton to name a few.

Please spread the word and follow along here or on social media so we can continue having the priviledge of highlighting our athletes, our community.
