Knights three-peat

Updated: 4 days ago

One goal down. Two more to go. The Holy Names sr. boys basketball team took care of business in the AAA final Sunday night at the St. Clair College Sportsplex beating Sandwich 83-60. "When we play together offensively we look really good." said Knights head coach Ryan Steer. "The way we started that game was awesome. It's tough to sustain for four quarters but happy with our effort."

Holy Names quickly came out and set the tone on offence building up a 30-8 lead after the first quarter. The Sabres were much more consistent after that winning two of the last three quarters but there was no magic run that put the game in balance.

"Wouldn't have liked to give up 60, that's not where we like our defence at we'll fix that for Thursday."

Austin Brown led all scorers with 23. Arlind Avdo pitched in 20 for the Knight who cruised through the regular season with a 9-0 record beating their opponents by an average of 40.4 points per game. The closest game they had was against Tecumseh Vista, who won the AA title vs Kennedy, by a difference of 17 points during the last game of the regular season.

Steer's team did lose to Hamilton's Cathedral High School in the final of an all-catholic tournament in St. Catharine's earlier this season which has helped to motivate the team.

"We didn't come out on the right end," Steer told Powerplay Sports. "That was kind of a punch in the face, a learning lesson so hopefully we'll learn from that and close out the game when we're in that situation."

The Knights play for the SWOSSA championship Thursday on the road for a chance to return to OFSAA where they won bronze a year ago.

"Definitely looking to build on the bronze." Steer said.

This is why...

Powerplay Sports was born while on a trip to Italy in the summer of 2018. Walking through a charming pedestrian underpass reminded me of being in the tunnel at the University of Michigan in the early part of my career. That feeling led to thoughts of Windsor Lancers football camp opening in three weeks and all of the fall sports that weren't going to be covered because of cuts to local sports coverage by legacy media.

With the support of a loving wife and family, I decided to create Powerplay Sports as a passion project.

I've come across some great people who have helped capture the essence of our community throughout the years like Tony Techko, Tony Doucette, Scott Scantlebury, Dom Papa, Steve Bell, Will Hill, Jim Parker and Mary Caton to name a few.

Please spread the word and follow along here or on social media so we can continue having the priviledge of highlighting our athletes, our community.
