For the second time this season Holy Names held Villanova off the scoreboard. The first time saw the teams play to a scoreless draw in early April. The latest was in a 2-0 victory to seal the Knights' second straight WECSSAA title at Acumen Stadium Wednesday night.
"There was definitely lots of pressure especially after winning OFSAA (last year)," said Anna Pozzi who scored the first goal of the game for Holy Names. "We didn't let that affect us. We practiced hard. We knew Villy was a good team. We worked to use our strengths and it worked."
The city title is what Emily Renaud and three other grade 12's signed up for. All three play club soccer but didn't play high school ball until this spring. "I'm very happy to be part of this team," said Renaud who scored in the 75th minute to ice the game. "The team looked really good last year and I wanted to be part of it. It's fun. It feels like a family and we work really hard. I'm very lucky."
The Knights are hosting OFSAA starting June 6. They'll first play the winner of Chatham's UCC and Sarnia Northern. If Holy Names wins, Villanova can play a challenge game to be the SWOSSA entry at OFSAA. If the Knights lose, UCC or Northern will be the SWOSSA entry.
"I think if we come with the same effort and mentality we had in the finals and playoffs I think we can be successful." Pozzi said.
