The Holy Names sr. girls basketball team earned a bronze medal at the provincial championships in Brampton. "Overall we were happy with how we defended and played, particularly in the bronze medal game versus a very good St. Thomas More tream from Hamilton." said head coach Sean Culhane.
The 2nd seeded Knights beat Brampton's St. Roch Ravens 64-40 in the opening game of the tournament as Mariam Mazloum came off the bench to lead the team with 14 points. Holy Names went on to down Kingston's Holy Cross 60-24 in their second game with Anna Pozzi leading the charge with 16 points.
On day two, Jane Pozzi dropped 18 as the Knights beat 6-seed Lawrence Park Collegiate 56-35 in the quarter finals. Holy Names faced 2nd-seeded Maple Ridge from Barrie and found themselves down by 22 at one point in the game before cutting the deficit to six. They couldn't come back all the way losing 58-47 to a Ravens team that went on to win the gold.
Holy Names beat St. Thomas More 80-54 getting big games from Jane Pozzi who netted 24 and Yasmine Kadri who chipped in 20.
The Knights won silver two years ago in Windsor. A WECSSAA representative has not won gold at OFSAA since tracking began in 1975.
"Obviously we were disappointed in our semi-final loss to the #2 seed Maple Ridge as we feel like we didn't have our best game but very proud of how the team responded in the bronze medal game." Said Culhane who feels two OFSAA medals in three years is a great accomplishment for the program.
