Julius "Dr J" Irving headlines WESPY's

There's only one way to describe this year's keynote speaker for the 18th edition of the WESPY Awards. "The show no doubt will be a slam dunk." WESPY founder Dom Papa told Powerplay Sports.

The basketball legend's presence continues the strong tradition of providing area fans with a keynote speaker that rose to prominence in their chosen sport.

Dr. J, as he is affectionately known, is widely regarded as one of the greatest basketeball players in history. Born in 1950 in Roosevelt New York, Erving's impact revolutionized the game with his dazzling dunks and his graceful style of play. He popularized the slam dunk and baseline reverse layups which became iconic.

Erving helped the New York Nets win the ABA championships in 1974 and 1976 before helping the Philadelphia 76's to the NBA title in 1983 over Magic Johnson and the Los Angeles Lakers.

"Before Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson came along he was the face of basketball," Papa said. "He's respected by all. Anybody that talks about Dr. J just say positive things. He was fierce on the court but away from the court he was a gentleman."

The WESPY's is scheduled for April 30th at the Caboto Club. For tickets or more information you can reach out by email info@thewespys.ca

This is why...

Powerplay Sports was born while on a trip to Italy in the summer of 2018. Walking through a charming pedestrian underpass reminded me of being in the tunnel at the University of Michigan in the early part of my career. That feeling led to thoughts of Windsor Lancers football camp opening in three weeks and all of the fall sports that weren't going to be covered because of cuts to local sports coverage by legacy media.

With the support of a loving wife and family, I decided to create Powerplay Sports as a passion project.

I've come across some great people who have helped capture the essence of our community throughout the years like Tony Techko, Tony Doucette, Scott Scantlebury, Dom Papa, Steve Bell, Will Hill, Jim Parker and Mary Caton to name a few.

Please spread the word and follow along here or on social media so we can continue having the priviledge of highlighting our athletes, our community.
