Graniero hoping third time is the charm

Updated: Sep 2, 2023

"I'm hoping to make the team full time. That would be pretty great." Forward Nick Graniero.

Nick Graniero is one of ten players that will open training camp with the Windsor Spitfires after suiting up for the LaSalle Vipers Wednesday night in an exhibition game against the Chatham Maroons. "The past couple of weeks have been good like getting back on the ice, getting back in the flow of things." said the 19-year old. "I'm excited for camp."

The LaSalle native was called up last season and saw action in seven games with the Spitfires. He worked hard over the summer training at ETS and continued playing hockey without skates. Graniero, along with teammate Owen Findlay, played in the Windsor Ball Hockey Association where he quickly became an offensive threat. He also represented Windsor at the national ball hockey championships in Mississauga.

"Graniero is a player who you want on your team. " said new Vipers head coach Chad Shepley. "He has tremendous speed and plays a strong power forward game. Playing a handful of games with the Spits last year he should be feeling confident heading into camp."

Here are some shots from Wednesday's exhibition game between the Vipers and Maroons. LaSalle opened the game with three goals in the first five minutes and went on to win 5-2.

"Another great resource for local sports produced by a person that has been invested in local sports for decades."

This is why...

Powerplay Sports was born while on a trip to Italy in the summer of 2018. Walking through a charming pedestrian underpass reminded me of being in the tunnel at the University of Michigan in the early part of my career. That feeling led to thoughts of Windsor Lancers football camp opening in three weeks and all of the fall sports that weren't going to be covered because of cuts to local sports coverage by legacy media.

With the support of a loving wife and family, I decided to create Powerplay Sports as a passion project.

I've come across some great people who have helped capture the essence of our community throughout the years like Tony Techko, Tony Doucette, Scott Scantlebury, Dom Papa, Steve Bell, Will Hill, Jim Parker and Mary Caton to name a few.

Please spread the word and follow along here or on social media so we can continue having the priviledge of highlighting our athletes, our community.
