Downes earns Golden Shoe

Reflection....by Kurt Downes.

Honoured, Grateful, Humbled.

I was honoured to recently be named the recipient of the 2020 Golden Shoe Award, as Canadian Running Magazine’s “Community Builder of the Year”. The Covid-19 pandemic presented us all with a great many challenges in 2020. Likewise, it presented us with numerous opportunities. A few of those opportunities for me, came in the form of planning for our successful Border City Athletics Club #WomenCan and #GirlsCan initiatives. Being able to support women coaches, giving #BIPOC populations a voice in athletics and introducing developing BIPOC females to sport, are tasks I do not take lightly. I’m forever grateful for the opportunity to host such an event. I’m also humbled by the support from our panelists and organizers who helped to put it all together. Thank you, Canadian Running Magazine for this generous award.

Here’s to starting off 2021 with purpose and intent.

This is why...

Powerplay Sports was born while on a trip to Italy in the summer of 2018. Walking through a charming pedestrian underpass reminded me of being in the tunnel at the University of Michigan in the early part of my career. That feeling led to thoughts of Windsor Lancers football camp opening in three weeks and all of the fall sports that weren't going to be covered because of cuts to local sports coverage by legacy media.

With the support of a loving wife and family, I decided to create Powerplay Sports as a passion project.

I've come across some great people who have helped capture the essence of our community throughout the years like Tony Techko, Tony Doucette, Scott Scantlebury, Dom Papa, Steve Bell, Will Hill, Jim Parker and Mary Caton to name a few.

Please spread the word and follow along here or on social media so we can continue having the priviledge of highlighting our athletes, our community.
