Cornhole with United Way

The United Way Centraide Windsor-Essex Chatham-Kent is hosting a cornhole tournament August 18th at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 594 on Howard Avenue. The event is being hosted by the Retiree Volunteer Council and features prizes, music by DJ Struggz and more.

"It's a type of activity that most can participate in no matter the level," said Leilani Logronio, manager of labour programs and services. "What I've learned is that cornhole is a fast growing sport and is being considered as an Olympic sport one day."

Logronio says the event has a social swap format with everyone guaranteed four games. Participants will be randomly paired with a new partner each game creating a fun atmosphere.

Of course there is the fundraising side to the event. One player has already raised over $2,000 and will likely qualify for one of the incentive prizes, one of which is a Sprucewood Winery Experience for eight people.

Sign up for a good time for a good cause. Proceeds will benefit United Way's On Track to Success program.

This is why...

Powerplay Sports was born while on a trip to Italy in the summer of 2018. Walking through a charming pedestrian underpass reminded me of being in the tunnel at the University of Michigan in the early part of my career. That feeling led to thoughts of Windsor Lancers football camp opening in three weeks and all of the fall sports that weren't going to be covered because of cuts to local sports coverage by legacy media.

With the support of a loving wife and family, I decided to create Powerplay Sports as a passion project.

I've come across some great people who have helped capture the essence of our community throughout the years like Tony Techko, Tony Doucette, Scott Scantlebury, Dom Papa, Steve Bell, Will Hill, Jim Parker and Mary Caton to name a few.

Please spread the word and follow along here or on social media so we can continue having the priviledge of highlighting our athletes, our community.
