Sophia Bechard will treat the U23 Canadian Wrestling Championships like any other tournament when things get underway Saturday in Calgary. " I have confidence in my training and all of the work I've put in this past year," Bechard told Poweplay Sports. "Montreal is truly the best wrestling club in Canada. The expertise from our world class coaches is invaluable and I have trust in our process and preparation."
Earlier this year Bechard won silver at Senior Nationals in Ottawa which she is using as a springboard into this weekend's meet. If she wins in Calgary she'll be able to secure a spot with Team Canada and compete on the world stage. "I have such a huge support system whether it be my family, friends, or teammates and any chance I get to share a moment on the podium with them is one I'll definitely remember."
The Windsor native says Linda Morais is one of her biggest inspirations and a major reason she decided to move to Montreal to continue training. "She is also a product of my high school club L'Essor Lutte." said the 21-year old of the Tecumseh native who recently punched her ticket to the Olympic Games in Paris. "I remember watching her at the 2019 Canadian Olympic Trials and being in awe of her talent and success."
Bechard feels fortunate to have her as a role model. "Being able to regularly train in a room with Linda and so many other international performers is a crazy reality,"Bechard said. "Her achieving yet another milestone only solidifies that I made the right decision three years ago and am exactly where I need to be."
Bechard will compete in the 55kg division.
