Disappointment as St. Clair falls short

The hopes and dreams of the men and women's basketball teams at St. Clair College were dashed on Sunday afternoon at the OCAA championship tournament. The Saints fell short in their quest to bring home a medal losing in the bronze medal game.

Poor shooting hurt the women's team

The Saints shot 15-78 (19%) for the game losing to Niagara 67-52. Rookie guard Ania Buklarewicz led St. Clair with 14 points. Kaitlyn Overeem, A CCAA All-Canadian, was held to nine points on 1-9 shooting. The Saints were outrebounded 62-47 and the Knights outscored St. Clair in the paint 32-4.

Sluggist start costly for the men

The Saints found themselves in a hole early and trailed 53-31 at the half. St. Clair made a second half push but fell short losing 82-69 against host Durham. St. Clair felt the effect of not having fifth-year starter Chad Vincent-Simon. The OCAA men's basketball Player of The Year was suspended as a result of a play late in St. Clair's quarter-final win over Centennial on February 24th. Rookie guard Andrew Loyuk led the Saints with 24 points.

The Windsor Express is starting to roll

The Express beat London Sunday afternoon 100-95 for their fourth win in five games. Windsor trailed by four heading into the fourth quarter but outscored the home team 33-24 to complete a weekend sweep that saw them beat Newfoundland Saturday night.

Paul Harrison led all scorers with 30 points while Latin Davis pitched in 20 for Windsor. Former Express players Chris Jones (26) and Billy White (25) led the Lightning who fall to 12-7 and dropped out of first. Windsor improves to 9-6 and moved up to 4th in the Basketball Super League standings.

This is why...

Powerplay Sports was born while on a trip to Italy in the summer of 2018. Walking through a charming pedestrian underpass reminded me of being in the tunnel at the University of Michigan in the early part of my career. That feeling led to thoughts of Windsor Lancers football camp opening in three weeks and all of the fall sports that weren't going to be covered because of cuts to local sports coverage by legacy media.

With the support of a loving wife and family, I decided to create Powerplay Sports as a passion project.

I've come across some great people who have helped capture the essence of our community throughout the years like Tony Techko, Tony Doucette, Scott Scantlebury, Dom Papa, Steve Bell, Will Hill, Jim Parker and Mary Caton to name a few.

Please spread the word and follow along here or on social media so we can continue having the priviledge of highlighting our athletes, our community.
