Windsor's Rocco Awad to a leap of faith and left St. Anne High School to play prep basketball in London. His hope was to eventually land a scholarship in the U.S. and the dream has been realized. He has committed to playing at New Jersey Tech on a full ride.

"Feels amazing that I'm achievnig my goal of going D1," Awad told Powerplay Sports. "It's been a dream since I was young and now that I'm committed I know the real work has only just started."

Awad was chosen as the WECSSAA Tier 1 Mr. Basketball in 2023 before moving away to join the London Basketball Academy where he led the team in scoring in his first season.

"Leaving home helped a ton with realizing my goal because it forced me to push myself harder than before with little distraction." Awad said.

Awad will begin his post secondary career in Newark, New Jersey playing for the Highlanders this fall. NJIT plays in the Amerca East conference.

"I love the facility, the whole staff, how much the school does for the program and they play in a good conference. I enjoyed meeting all the guys and I'm excited to work with them next year.

This is why...

Powerplay Sports was born while on a trip to Italy in the summer of 2018. Walking through a charming pedestrian underpass reminded me of being in the tunnel at the University of Michigan in the early part of my career. That feeling led to thoughts of Windsor Lancers football camp opening in three weeks and all of the fall sports that weren't going to be covered because of cuts to local sports coverage by legacy media.

With the support of a loving wife and family, I decided to create Powerplay Sports as a passion project.

I've come across some great people who have helped capture the essence of our community throughout the years like Tony Techko, Tony Doucette, Scott Scantlebury, Dom Papa, Steve Bell, Will Hill, Jim Parker and Mary Caton to name a few.

Please spread the word and follow along here or on social media so we can continue having the priviledge of highlighting our athletes, our community.
